Zachary J. Smith, Democratic primary candidate for the Maine House of Representatives, District 24

Welcome to my site. I am running for Maine’s state house district that covers parts of Bangor, Brewer, and Orono plus all of Veazie.

The map for this district is linked below.

An unapologetically progressive platform to confront the challenges of our time.

Climate change, an inadequate housing supply, the cost of living crisis, rising fascist movements, mass incarceration: these problems and others demand political solutions that recognize the significant effects that they have on Maine (and beyond). Of course, no individual, whether a legislator or not, can wave a magic wand and implement sweeping policy changes. But I believe that if elected I can play a major role in effecting positive change through the state legislature.

Criminal Law Reform

Incarceration should be reserved for only the most dangerous individuals in society, and we should ensure that every defendant gets due process of law.

Climate Change

This is literally an existential threat to all forms of life on Earth, and we procrastinate at our peril.

Housing

A home is a necessary component of a safe, dignified, healthy life. It is an outrage that so many people are homeless in the world’s wealthiest nation.

The Cost of Living Crisis

Large corporations have been shamelessly gouging us on the prices of food and other essential household items in recent years, and we are not powerless to respond.

Indigenous Relations

It is an ethical imperative for the state government to continue to improve the conditions for indigenous people’s sovereignty.

A Maine Public Bank

The legislature should explore the establishment of a government-controlled bank, modeled after the Bank of North Dakota, to store all of the state government’s deposits and offer low-cost services to Mainers as an alternative to commercial banks.

Bold Ideas

I do not have a monopoly on good ideas, but I do want to bring some new and creative concepts to Augusta. I envision a better society and refuse to accept that this is the best that we can do.

Toward a better Maine for all.
